“Theologian who resisted to the Nazi dictatorship”
“Martyred at age of 39”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born into a German aristocratic family in 1906. At the age of 21, he studied theology and later completed his Doctor of Theology degree. Later on, Bonhoeffer contributed to the establishment of the Confessing Church, an organization that proclaimed not Hitler but Jesus as the head of the church. During June of 1933, Bonhoeffer was offered a teaching fellowship and traveled to the United States. This fellowship opportunity would have guaranteed him an automated escape from forced military draft to the German army. However, two weeks later, he found himself back in Germany to accomplish the mission God had given him. In 1943, Bonhoeffer became engaged to Maria von Wedemeye, but his happiness was interrupted when he was arrested by the Gestapo police while helping Jews escape to Switzerland. In July of 1944, Bonhoeffer’s imprisonment became harder, and soon after he was forced to a concentration camp where he was hanged on April 9, 1945, merely two weeks before his release date.
Pastor Bonhoeffer’s Last Words
“This is the end — for me the beginning of life.”
The Daniel Prayer Fast is starting from today. We will invite Pastor Bonhoeffer during this upcoming Daniel Prayer Fast. Please install the app “Just Show Up,” create an account, and join the club labeled Nashua Hanmaum Church. Starting on March 20th, we will listen to the words of Pastor Bonhoeffer for the next 18 days. The topic of the sermons will be “Life Together.” Think of it as spending just 10-15 minutes per day listening to a sermon. After service today, I will be open to assisting anyone who has trouble installing or creating an account during the upcoming couple of Sundays after church. We will have a separate meeting for those from the English Congregation; if you want to participate in the Daniel Prayer Fast, or Pastor Bonhoeffer’s sermon feel free to ask me any questions.
Following the shepherd…
